The Matter of Being is a relationship and resource management game set in Weather Factory's Sixth History* (Cultist Simulator, Book of Hours). Take on the role of an otherworldly being facing a fate worse than death, and cast off your immortality by being born into the mortal world.

  • A turn based game with visual novel elements.

  • Manage your resources to buy time against a ticking clock.

  • Explore an alternate history Boston as you try to thwart the implacable gods known as the Hours.

Befriend, beguile, and blackmail your way through the practitioners of the Invisible Arts. They want your power, and you'll give it to them, but every bargain has a price. Leverage these bargains to become a powerful creature with a loyal flock.

  • Build relationships with cultists as you satisfy the letter — and sometimes even the spirit — of their Faustian pacts.

  • Control their relationships to each other to expose weaknesses, uphold your reputation, and gain loyal servants.

  • Inherit the stats of followers who swear themselves to your cause.

Choose from a roster of spirits pursued by ancient foes, wracked by cryptic afflictions, and hunted by tenacious mortals. It will take cunning, and all the humble gifts of the mortal world, to escape annihilation.

  • Birth yourself from a great feast, steal a mortal's body, or open a door to the Moon. Each playable spirit has a unique win condition and set of abilities.

  • Explore the same cast of mortal characters from different perspectives across playthroughs. A character might become a thrall, a lover, or dinner depending on your goals.

  • Earn a natural death.
